A Psyciatric Study on the School Entrance Test Stress Syndrome






Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of school entrance test on adolescent¢¥s mental disorder, and to secure effective measures coping with school entrance test stress syndrome.
The subjects consisted of 41 third grade middle school students, 56 third grade high school students and 63 reexaminees who were admitted to the Department of Neuro-Psychiatry of Chung Ang University Hospital from January, 1981 to December, 1981.
Summary of the results were as follows;
1) Among 877 adolescent psychiatric inpatients, examinees were 18.2%, 63.1 % of reexaminees was hospitalized due to school enterance test syndrome(SETS). Among examinees, the rate of SETS was 71.4% in reexaminee, 67.8% in the third grade of high school, and 43.9% in third grade middle school.
2) The neurotic disorder, affective disorder, and adjustment disorder were more frequently observed in the SETS group, whereas psychotic disorder was more frequently observed the NonSETS group.
3) The histrionic personality trait, dependent personality trait, and obsessive compulsive personality trait were more frequently observed in the SETS, whereas paranoid personality trait, schizotypal personality trait and antisocial personality trait were more frequently observed in the Non-SETS group.
4) The somatization, anxiety and paranoid thinking were more frequently observed in the SETS group, whereas sleep disturbance and hostility were more frequently observed in the Non-SETS group. Significant chief complaints SETS group are headache and nervousness, but that of NonSETS group are irrtability and insomnia.
5) The SETS group had short period of hospitalization than Non-SETS group, and frequently admitted from March to June.
6) According to the MMPI clinical scale, the score of Depression scale, Masculinity-Feminity scale, Paranoid scale, Psychastenia scale, and Social introversion scale were higher in SETS group than Non-SETS group.
